How does the vat dyeing mechanism fix color onto cellulosic fibers?

Vat dyes are water-insoluble colorants that must be chemically reduced to a soluble leuco form using sodium hydrosulfite and sodium hydroxide before fiber absorption. Once the dye exhausts onto the cotton substrate, re-oxidation converts it back to the insoluble pigment form, anchoring the color within the fiber structure. This fixation mechanism is what underpins vat dyes’ exceptional wash fastness performance.

Unlike many reactive and direct dyes that degrade under hypochlorite conditions, vat dyes exhibit strong resistance to chlorine-based washing agents.
