Skydiro® Direct Dyes

Direct dyes are water-soluble dyes that are mainly used on cellulosic fibers. They have a natural affinity for fibers like cotton and viscose, so they can dye the material directly from the dye bath without needing a chemical fixation step like reactive dyes. In practice, they are valued for simple application, broad shade range, and cost-effective processing.

Direct dyes work best on cellulose-based fibers such as cotton, viscose, rayon, and linen. They are mainly used where easy application and good dye coverage on cellulosic materials are important. In industrial dyeing, cotton and viscose are the most common substrates.

Salt is added to improve dye exhaustion. It helps reduce the repulsion between the negatively charged dye molecules and the fiber surface, so more dye can move from the dye bath onto the fabric. In simple terms, salt helps the fiber take up the dye more effectively.

Direct dyes are popular because they are easy to use, relatively economical, and available in a wide range of shades. They are well suited to large-scale dyeing of cellulosic fibers where process simplicity and cost control are important. They can also provide good levelness when the process is properly managed.

Aftertreatment is often used to improve wet fastness, especially wash fastness. Since direct dyes do not form a chemical bond with the fiber, some unfixed dye can remain and affect performance. A proper aftertreatment step helps improve durability and makes the final shade more stable in use.
